Setting up BYU email in Apple Mail
An email account is provided to every student registered at BYU. This address is [your net id]@email.byu.edu. You can access your mail via a web-based client through Route Y. Many student are not aware however that you can also access your mail via any POP email client. This article will provide detailed steps on how to set this up.
Setting up Apple Mail to send and receive your BYU email is as simple as setting up any other email account. An example screen shot is provided below.
- Launch Apple Mail
- Open Preferences
- Navigate to the “Accounts” pane
- Click the add button (small plus symbol in lower-left) to create a new account
- Enter your BYU email account’s credentials under the “Account Information” tab

- Select “POP” for “Account Type”
- “Description” can be anything you want (such as “BYU”)
- “Email address” is your BYU email address (generally, [your net id]@email.byu.edu)
- Enter your name for “Full Name”
- The “Incoming Mail Server” is “email.byu.edu”
- Your “User Name” is your Net ID
- “Password” is NOT your Route Y password. It is a password that you must set up specifically for retrieving your email via POP. (You may set up this password by logging into Route Y, going into Post Office, and clicking the “change password” link in the top navigation.)
- The “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” is “email.byu.edu”
