Using BYU’s LDAP server in Address Book

Setting up the BYU’s LDAP server on your Mac allows you to access BYU’s directory seamlessly from your Address Book and Mail applications. Find contact information like email addresses, campus addresses, etc. on all BYU faculty, staff, and students. The following article explains how to set up Address Book to connect to and use this service.

1. Launch Address Book
2. Open Preferences
3. Navigate to the “LDAP” pane

   

4. Click the add button (small plus symbol in lower-left) to configure a new LDAP server connection
5. Enter the required credentials for BYU’s LDAP server

   

   • Name: BYU LDAP
   • Server: ldap.byu.edu
   • Search Base: ou=people,o=byu.edu
   • Port: 389
   • Scope: Subtree

6. Click “Save” and close Preferences
7. Next, select “BYU LDAP” under the “Directories” group in the main Address Book window
8. Searches performed in Addressbook will now return results from BYU’s directory

   

Note that you can toggle the results to show either phone, email, or address. Access to this data is also now available from any application that accesses Address Book’s data. So, for example, entering the first few characters of names or addresses into a new message composition window in Mail will begin an automatic search of not only your Address Book, but BYU’s directory as well (assuming that leave this LDAP server enabled in the Preferences), and offer suggestions for auto-completion.
