Accessing BYU’s web publishing space
Each student is provided with 15MB of disk space on a web server for publishing web documents. This service is not enabled by default and must be requested through the Office of Information Technology. This article describes how to request web publishing space and how to transfer your files onto the server.
To request web publishing space…
- Go to https://it.byu.edu/index.cfm?child_id=172
- Click “Order Service (Personal)” under “Ordering” in the left hand column
- Authenticate with your Route Y username and passphrase
- Continue through the next form page, and then “submit” the final form after verifying your personal information
You will then receive two emails from OIT; one ticket for the request and another stating that set up has been completed.
You are now ready to upload files the server. Your space on the web server can be accessed by mounting the directory in Finder. This is done by…
- Selecting “Connect to Server…” (cmd+K) from the Go menu
- Entering “smb://webpub.byu.edu/
” for the server address - Clicking “Connect”

Note: You can “bookmark” this address in the Connect to Server dialogue by clicking the add (small plus symbol) buttom.
This will mount your web publishing space. Within this directory, you will find three folders: CGI, groups, and www. Put everything that you want accessible via the web in the “www” directory. The address to access your files will be “http://webpub.byu.net/
Note: Your web pages may be viewed anywhere in the world via the internet, but access to your web space directory to add, edit, or delete your files is only accessible from on campus.
