BYU Signature Card Printing From Your Mac

Have you ever needed to print a paper last minute but allthe computers in the lab were taken? Well guess what, you can actually print to BYU’s printers from the comfort of your own Mac, from anywhere in the world.

1. Open up the Printer Setup Utility. There are a few ways to get there: in your Applications/Utilities folder, from System Preferences/Print & Fax/Set Up Printers, or from any application go to Print/Printer/Edit Printer List.
2. Hold the option key and click on Add. This will add an Advanced option to the Menu which you will need.
3. Choose Advanced from the menu.
4. For Device, choose Internet Printing Protocol using IPP
5. There’s a list of available printers here. You’ll need to know the name of the printer you want to print to later (those are underscores, not spaces). You may be asked if you wish to install the iPrint client, just cancel. (If it takes you back here try opening the link in a new window or tab by command or control clicking the link, or just download the client and throw it away later.)
6. Just call the Printer whatever you want, though I suggest something that will remind you where it is, like WSC 1111.
7. For the Device URI, put the printer’s address in this format: ipp://ryid:password@128.187.22.89/ipp/. The username is your Route Y username, and the password is anything you want.
8. Just leave Printer Model as Generic, or feel free to select the appropriate printer driver for the model you’re trying to install.
9. Now just check it over to make sure everything is right, especially the address, and press Add. Your screen should look like this.

And that’s it. Now you if you want to print to one of BYU’s printers, connect to the internet, select the one you want in the Print window and press Print. Then just go to that printer and swipe your card. Your job should come up as though you printed it from a computer within the lab. Select it and Print.
