Desktop Manager

I’d like to recomend a piece of software I thought was cool. I just downloaded the newest version of Desktop Manager and it has some cool features that I don’t think were in past versions.

What it does is let you have as many desktop sessions you want running at a time. The default is four. It has either a “pager” in the corner of the window, or a menu item in your menu bar, either with 4 squares representing different desktops. You can be working on a school paper on one desktop, and then go to annother where you have your browser open with your sources, then go to annother where you have your e-mail and chat open etc. It’s pretty handy when you’ve got 12 inches of screen, and tons of things going on at once.

The new feature that really got my attention was the transition method. Before, the windows would kind of just fade, and the others would appear. Now, you can choose between about 10 different transition methods. The coolest is the cube. The same cube spinning that happens with user switching, except between different desktop sessions. If you’ve got 4 desktops and use the cube, you can imagine your desktop as a (wait for it…) CUBE with four sides to work on. I tried to take a screenshot, but couldn’t get the timing right. The other effects are pretty cool too.

The price is very good free (GPL), it works great, and looks cool.
