Every now and then, I manage to create a fun little application for my Mac. When they prove to be really neat, I like to share them. My latest creation is a simple, straight-forward little app called MagicDesktopSwitch. Download it and check it out. It’s free!

So… impress your PC friends! MagicDesktopSwitch switches on your screen saver to run as your Desktop image. Keep MagicDesktopSwitch in your Dock and you can toggle the amazing and magical screen-saver effect at will.

If you don’t have a lot of hard-drive space but like to pimp your Mac, MagicDesktopSwitcher is only 84.7KB. If you don’t like having apps hogging a lot of memory and processor power, as soon as your screen-saver engine starts, MagicDesktopMagic quits and does not idle in the background.

Also, the BYUMUGRSS widget is available at the same page. Check them both out at http://joey.mimweddings.com/downloads.html.

It is time to get the BYUMUG meetings rolling and our first meeting is going to be great for everyone even those Windows users who are thinking about a Mac. For those of you who are more advanced users we have something planned for you as well. Below are the details.

What: BYUMUG Meeting
When: Thursday October 18, 2007
Where: 3710 HBLL (South Entrance of the Library)
Time: 5:30pm - 7pm
Cost: Free!! Everyone is invited!

Prizes and refreshments for all who attend! If you are new Mac user bring your questions! We will stay after and answer questions on any topic. For more info and free membership, visit mac.byu.edu. Compared to OS X, Windows may suck, but sometimes there isn’t a good alternative, so three of our brave BYUMUG members have risked blue screens of death, viruses, and system crashes to teach us all about the joys of running Windows on the Mac. Our meeting this thursday will include: Demos of Parallels, Fusion and Bootcamp. Learn the difference between these technologies, and which is right for you. See Windows XP and Vista on the Mac.

Apple is making their first-ever recruiting appearance at BYU, partly due to the 4 interns from BYU this summer (including myself and Jason Miller). My recruiter, Lindsay Turner—who deals primarily with IT-related jobs at Apple—as well as 2 BYU alumni currently working at Apple will be on campus Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

An information session will be held Wednesday evening from 6-7 in room 3290 of the Wilkinson Center, around the corner from Joe’s digs at Cougar Computer. Additionally, Apple will have a booth at the technical career fair on Thursday from 9 am - 3 pm or thereabouts.

For those interested, come meet some people from Apple and see if it’s a good match for you. They’re primarily recruiting technical people such as software engineers and IT professionals, but there are tons of opportunities in other areas inside the company, and I’m sure that you can get in touch with recruiters for different departments.

Not long ago I was “printing” some web receipts as PDFs to my Web Receipts folder using the usual PDF button found in the print dialogue. I decided to actually see for myself that all these were being saved so I looked in my Documents folder, found Web Receipts and lo and behold, there was only one file from that website. Apparently if the title of the web page is the same it just overwrites the previous file. So I found the Automator script in /Library/PDF Services and made some changes.

This way it will add the date and a sequential number to the end of the file name.

Earlier this week I presented the iPhone at the MUG meeting. I do have to say that the AppleCare Service I received on this phone was the best I have ever received.

I want to correct a statement I made in the meeting. A person asked if it kept ALL my iPhone preferences, background, rings, alarms, weather and everything else and I answered no.

However when I got my replacement, everything that I had setup on the AppleCare Service phone, was transfered to my new phone that they replaced. The screen when I first synced said “Restoring Backup”. I was so excited!

I don’t know why my the service phone didn’t restore my backup but I am delighted that my replacement phone did.
