I have had my MacBook since January and have never had a problem with Mail until I tried to use it in conjunction with the BYU network. I am able to download email from online email accounts (gmail, hotmail, and a previous universities email server) but after writing an email while connected to the BYU network the send function does not work. All outgoing messages are just archived in the Outbox and I can't send them until I arrive home and connect to my personal network. It is very annoying as much of what I need to do in my graduate assistantship involves emailing local organizations and I am unable to do so while at work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will try to call the IT office again on Monday also...thanks!
I had this same problem and ended up having to set up something called gateway.byu.edu. I don't actually recall how to do it, but I know that if you call BYU IT they can walk you through it. Maybe one of the other answerers knows how...
Edit: Okay, I did some digging through my mail settings. All you do is go to Preference>Accounts. Click the drop down menu labeled "Outgoing Mail Server" and click on "Edit Server List..."
From there, click the little plus sign and a new connection should pop up. Double click to add a name and type in "gateway.byu.edu". Then click on the advanced tab. Make sure the port is set to 25 and that SSL is checked on.
This should allow you to use BYU's gateway for outgoing mail. It's what I always have to use on campus.
PS-- That's for Mail 3.4, so if you have the older version you might try the suggestion just below. Though I thought you were supposed to use gateway.byu.edu for the old mail as well...
I had this exact problem last fall. I had to add an outgoing mail server in Mail.
These steps are for Mail 2.1.3 - I believe Leopard has a slight upgrade to the layout of Mail, If someone notices a big discrepancy between these directions and the new look of Mail, please advise.

Under Preferences you'll see a dropdown menu next to the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):"
Click the drop down and select "add server"
In the popup box fill in: "Outgoing Mail Server:" nm.byu.edu
Server port: 465
Check the box for Use SSL
set the "Authentication" dropdown to "password"
User Name: put in your BYU Net ID.
Password: your Net ID password.

After Mail would attempt to send an outgoing email and fail(through my home server)...within a minute, it would pop up and ask if I wanted to use another server. I would then select the nm.byu.edu server and it would be sent just fine.
There is also very helpful PDF file on the BYU.edu website for setting up your BYU email address in mail. It can be found here. (http://it.byu.edu/go/BasicEmail) Click on the 'OS X Email' link in the left hand navigation panel. The PDF is very simple to follow and should get you up and running.
Good luck!

I think BYU wants to prevent people from using their internet connection to spam (ie, people come to BYU, hook up for free on the network, and send out lots of spam email), so they block all outgoing email that doesn't got through their own server. As Jay mentioned above, that server is "gateway.byu.edu". I'm pretty sure that if you set that up as your outgoing mail server, then it should work just fine.
